The optical imagery obtained from imagery satellite LANDSAT-7 ETM+ has been used in a variety of sectors including governmental, educational and commercial applications. Launching in April 15, 1999, LANDSAT-7 has provided over 16 years’ worth of satellite imagery which has been extensively used for long-term land use change detection.
Its multispectral sensor provides imagery with a Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) ranging from 15m to 60m (see table 1) with a 16 day revisit time.
Unfortunately, the Scan Line Corrector (SLC) on the ETM+ instrument failed on May 31, 2003: the instrument responsible for compensating for the satellites forward motion. This has rendered approximately 30% of each image missing.
