Envisat was launched in 2002 and operated until 2012. At 8 tons, it was the largest earth imaging satellite in orbit, with 10 instruments on board, including the synthetic aperture (imaging) radar. It was used intensively for a wide range of activities including ice monitoring and disaster assessment.
