Satellites images provide effective snapshot of flood extent

As this imagery from today shows in South Carolina, Satellites images provide effective snapshot of flood extent, where devastating floods have displaced many people.

Under the circumstances where flooding is “hidden” beneath clouds (which is quite common) satellite radar imagery can be used instead as it is able to “see” through clouds. Geocento is working with the Environment Agency in the UK as well as social media analytics company Knowledge Now. Both will demonstrate a technique for generating pro-active image tasking intelligence for satellites, with image suppliers being informed when flood events are likely or imminent with real time intelligence from social media.

It is hope that, if successful, this concept could be extended to other regions and types of hazard as a way of enabling satellite image surveillance to be as timely as possible in emergencies.
